Ellmau lies at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve, nestled between the Wilder Kaiser limestone massif to the north and the Hartkaiser mountain range to the south, approximately 17 km from the Kufstein-Süd motorway exit and about 17 km from Kitzbühel.

Ellmau is situated directly adjacent to Austria\'s largest ski area, the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental. The ski slopes and toboggan run lead right into the heart of the village.
